The caves might be the star attraction, but the trail system is worth a visit to Maquoketa Caves State Park as well. A manageable 7.62 mile system of trails meanders around the Raccoon Creek valley and some areas of prairie. Natural beauty surrounds visitors as they hike the shady trails and pause at highlights such as the “Natural Bridge,” standing nearly 50 feet over Raccoon Creek and the 17 ton “Balanced Rock”. Each season brings exceptional beauty from spring wildflowers to the lush greenery of summer. Fall’s dramatic golds and crimsons give way to a peaceful winter beauty decorated with snow and icicles.
